About the Materials

About Forged Colored Carbon Fiber

Common questions about what forged carbon fiber is, how Carbonaurum color works, and which product forms are available.

What is forged carbon fiber?

Forged carbon fiber is produced by compressing chopped carbon fiber strands under heat and pressure into a solid or hollow material form. Unlike woven carbon fiber, which shows a regular fabric weave, forged carbon fiber creates a random, organic, marble-like pattern.

This distinctive forged texture makes the material suitable for premium products where the carbon fiber pattern itself becomes part of the design identity. To learn more about the process, visit our forged carbon fiber technology page.

What makes Carbonaurum colored carbon fiber different from other colored carbon fiber products?

Many colored carbon fiber products achieve color through surface coating, resin tinting, laminated film, or printed visual layers. These methods can look attractive at first, but the color may exist only at or near the outer surface.

Carbonaurum colored forged carbon fiber is different. Our color is integrated throughout the material during the forging process. Machined faces, polished edges, drilled holes, cross-cut sections, turned profiles, and interior surfaces can all show consistent color depth and forged carbon fiber pattern.

What color collections are available?

Carbonaurum currently offers six forged colored carbon fiber collections: Vivid Color, Metallic Luster, Glow, Van Gogh, Aurora, and Opal.

These collections cover bold solid colors, metallic-tone effects, photoluminescent glow, swirling multi-color patterns, iridescent color-shift effects, and translucent gemstone-like appearances. View the full color collections page for more information.

Is the color consistent across production batches?

Carbonaurum matches color tone and collection character across production runs. However, forged carbon fiber is a natural random-pattern composite material, so exact pattern replication is not possible.

This is especially true for Van Gogh, Aurora, Opal, and other visually complex collections. Individual pieces within a batch may have unique pattern movement, color distribution, and visual character.

Is the color UV stable? Will it fade outdoors?

UV stability depends on the specific color collection, application environment, exposure time, surface finish, and whether the finished component will be used indoors or outdoors.

For applications with prolonged direct UV exposure, such as automotive exterior accessories, outdoor hardware, or exposed consumer products, we recommend contacting Carbonaurum before ordering.

What product forms are available?

Carbonaurum supplies forged colored carbon fiber in flat sheets, hollow tubes, solid blocks, solid rods, flat bars, and custom machined components.

Sheets are commonly used for panels, inserts, overlays, inlays, knife scales, and CNC-cut shapes. Tubes and rods are suitable for rings, pen barrels, handles, knobs, and cylindrical components. Blocks and bars are suitable for CNC machining, watch dials, knife handles, keyboard components, and custom hardware parts.

Machining and Fabrication

Machining, Turning, and Fabrication

Questions about CNC machining, lathe turning, tooling, polishing, safety, and fabrication behavior.

Can Carbonaurum carbon fiber be machined, turned, and milled?

Yes. Carbonaurum forged colored carbon fiber materials are designed as machinable stock. Sheets, tubes, blocks, rods, and bars are compatible with standard machining workflows, including CNC milling, lathe turning, drilling, routing, cutting, sanding, and polishing.

Because the color runs through the material, machining does not remove the color layer. Instead, the machined surface reveals the same color depth and forged carbon pattern as the exterior.

What tooling do I need to machine Carbonaurum carbon fiber?

Carbide-tipped tooling or solid carbide tools are recommended for machining carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is abrasive, so high-speed steel tools may wear quickly and are not recommended for production workflows.

For CNC milling and routing, use tooling suitable for composite materials. Clean fixturing, dust extraction, appropriate feed rate, and progressive finishing will help achieve better surface quality.

Can the material be polished to a high-gloss finish?

Yes. Carbonaurum forged colored carbon fiber can be polished to a high-gloss finish using progressive wet sanding, polishing compound, and final buffing.

No paint, lacquer, or additional color coating is required to reveal the material’s visual depth. This makes it suitable for jewelry rings, watch dials, pen barrels, knife scales, automotive trim, and premium consumer product components.

Does the color show on machined and polished surfaces?

Yes. This is one of the defining advantages of Carbonaurum colored forged carbon fiber. Because the color is integrated throughout the full cross-section, machined surfaces, cut edges, drilled holes, polished faces, bored interiors, and turned profiles all show consistent color.

This makes the material especially useful for products where edges, holes, interiors, or detailed machined surfaces remain visible in the finished part.

What safety precautions apply when machining carbon fiber?

Carbon fiber machining produces fine abrasive dust. Proper dust extraction, respiratory protection, eye protection, and workspace ventilation are important when cutting, sanding, drilling, routing, or CNC machining carbon fiber materials.

MSDS documentation is available on request and should be reviewed before machining. Buyers and manufacturers should also follow local workplace safety regulations and internal machining safety procedures.

Can carbon fiber sheets be bent or formed after supply?

Carbonaurum forged carbon fiber sheets are rigid thermoset composite panels and are not intended for cold bending or post-supply forming.

If your application requires a curved, three-dimensional, molded, or custom-shaped component, contact us to discuss whether a custom forged carbon fiber component can be produced according to your geometry.

What should I do when I receive samples?

We recommend evaluating samples under your actual production workflow. Useful tests include cutting a cross-section, drilling a hole, turning the material on a lathe, CNC milling a test feature, wet sanding and polishing, and comparing color depth between surface and cut section.

Custom Development

Custom Colors and Custom Components

Questions about custom colors, custom components, drawings, prototypes, and material matching.

Can you develop a custom color that is not in your standard collections?

Yes. Custom color development is available subject to feasibility and minimum volume requirements. You may provide a Pantone reference, RAL code, physical sample, photo reference, brand color direction, or detailed description.

View our standard color collections first to compare whether an existing collection already fits your project.

Can you produce custom components instead of raw stock?

Yes. In addition to raw material forms, Carbonaurum can supply finished or near-finished custom forged carbon fiber components.

This option is suitable for buyers who prefer ready-to-use or semi-finished parts instead of machining raw material themselves.

What information do I need to provide for a custom component inquiry?

Useful information includes component drawing, sketch, photo, target dimensions, tolerance requirements, preferred color collection, surface finish requirement, intended application, expected quantity, and whether the part is for prototype, small batch, or production supply.

Can you match a specific competitor’s product or existing carbon fiber material?

We can review a target color, pattern, or material character based on a physical sample, photo reference, or detailed description. Because forged carbon fiber has a naturally random pattern, exact visual duplication is not always possible.
